Snowy Waxy Cap

Cuphophyllus virgineus (also known as Hygrocybe virginea)

This small saprobe is found in grassy areas, pastures, parks and mossy patches, sometimes near forest edges; it grows from decaying matter which is often buried. It is white overall and may appear slightly translucent. The cap is up to 2 inches wide and feels waxy or slippery but not slimy; it may be slightly humped or wavy, and older specimens may appear to be turned inside-out. Stems are smooth and up to 3¼ inches tall; there is no ring. The widely spaced gills run down the stem for a short distance; they are thick and waxy or greasy-feeling. Snowy Waxy Cap has a white spore print and is found from summer through fall.

COMPARE: Ivory Waxy Cap (Hygrophorus eburneus) is slightly larger and its cap and stem are very slimy, especially when wet; it may turn slightly yellowish with age. • Golden-Spotted Waxy Cap (Hygrophorus chrysodon) has a white cap with a slightly sticky surface and fine yellowish-gold flakes that may wash away or fade with age; it is often found near conifers. • Species in the Limacella genus (particularly L. illinita) may resemble Snowy Waxy Cap, but their gills are slimy and free from the stem; caps are slimy. • The Sweater (toxic) is similar in size to Snowy Waxy Cap, but its caps are mottled and its gills are closely spaced.

NOTES: Snowy Waxy Caps are edible but not tasty; not recommended for amateurs due to the possibility of confusing them with toxic species. This may also be listed as Camarophyllus virgineus or Hygrophorus virgineus.
